Farm Happenings for August 24, 2021

Cantaloupes are here big time now! They had a rough start this year and the supply will be a bit less than planned as a result, but there should be enough to go around. More will be available in the coming weeks.

We're hitting the peak of tomato season as well. If you're thinking about canning or freezing tomatoes, grab one of the bulk boxes available as extras. There are two options there. There are canning tomatoes, which consist of a mix of the various tomatoes you have been seeing in your shares already, except these are the ones that didn't make the cut. These are the best bargain. They may have blemishes or odd shapes or may just be very ripe. We also have what we call sauce tomatoes - the less juicy paste, plum, and roma types traditionally used to make sauce. We're just starting to harvest these. There aren't many available yet, but more are coming.

The last of our record onion harvest is put away for curing. Two varieties are stacked up in the packshed where we usually cure them. The yellow storage onions didn't fit there so we created a curing space in the greenhouse for those. This marks the end of fresh onion sales. Any onions you receive going forward will be cured. They can be stored at room temperature until you use them. The choices this week are yellow sweet onions or red onions.
