Gravel Road Farm News-August 6, 2021

Posted on August 6th, 2021 by Brigid Ferkett

Watermelons are starting to be picked, but they might have been a little early, so if you received one that wasn't quite ready, let us know and we will make sure you get a replacement. They are sometimes hard to judge, and we don’t want to wait too long, for then they are not palatable at all. We want you to be happy, so please message us! ross@ferkett.com

We are harvesting all the onions right now. We pull them, brush off the soil, then layer them in black plastic harvest crates. They are stacked high in the pack shed. We prepare them for long term storage by drying them so that the outer skin becomes a protective layer. This is also called curing. We do this with garlic as well.

Market News: There will be a chef demo at the farm market on Saturday the 7th. This is to celebrate National Farmers Market Week, which is typically the first week of August when local food is abundant. Come to see/try/experience it at the market. There will be special incentives for SNAP users this day to get free produce.

Flower CSA Reminders: Put your wood crates and glass mason jars out each Tuesday. These two items are not included in the flower csa, they are just vessels for keeping the flowers upright and fresh in delivery. Remove your bouquet and leave the jar. We swap out the jars with clean ones.
