Farm Happenings for August 19, 2020

Posted on August 16th, 2020 by Claudia Frey

Good morning everyone!

Hitting an early record, we had our first frost of the season this week, the 13th.  We were not ready for it, as we have not yet had frost in August!  Luckily, we will only lose leaves on some plants, and any fruit it was bearing. Pumpkins, squash, green beans and peppers all received a little nip on some plants.  Others were unaffected. I hear some towns in eastern Washington received a frost the same morning.  We will be ready when the next frost comes, as we have begun building and setting up supports for the frost protection fabric in our beds.

Green beans are starting to ripen!  We will rotate them in until we have enough for everyone to have some in their shares, hopefully next week.  Green kohlrabi is ready also and will be in your shares this week, its mild brassica flavor is a favorite roasted or in salads.  Italian Dandelion is also making its first appearance this week.

Tomatoes, sprouting broccoli, calendula petals, and peppers will continue to be rotated in your shares, harvesting each as they are ready. We have mostly cherry tomatoes coming ripe, slicers are just starting to blush in color.

As a reminder, if you find your customization has reduced your variety of veggies, check your customization settings.  If you chose that you do not like a veggie, it will never be in your share customization.

We hope you all stay cool on this predicted record hot day.  It is amazing that within 5 days of each other we will have record heat and an August frost!

Have a wonderful week.

Claudia, Jim, Madeline, Emily and Stephanie
