Farm Happenings for September 29, 2021

Posted on September 26th, 2021 by Claudia Frey

Good morning everyone!

The fall days this past week have provided us with beautiful sunrises, sunsets, skies and warm winds!  What a beautiful fall!

At last, carrots are coming ready!  Look for them in your selections, as well as mixed variety potatoes-- the seed potatoes from last year's leftovers planted in May along with the Norland Red, Purple Majesty and Huckleberry Gold you have received so far this season.   We are waiting on the russets for your last share, in hopes of them making it to your Thanksgiving meals.  Our pie pumpkins and winter squash are late this year.  It is interesting how the heat stunted the growth of veggies, even ones that like the heat...  This week we are purchasing some pie pumpkins from Four Elements Farm in Puyallup.  Also certified organic, we purchased some early veggies from 4E to fill out our shares in June as well.  Each year we purchase from their farm to fill in any growing gap for our shares. While we want ALL produce to be ours, we recognize the challenges of growing in the mountain microclimate.  Four Elements is a great farm to partner with in providing you a well rounded share each week of the season. I am hoping our pie pumpkins will have ample time to ripen before a hard frost takes them!

Fall greens continue to come in, and we are incorporating them into your selections as they are ready.  We don't have enough of any one for all shares in one week, as they are still growing to size, but we are rotating them through everyone's shares.  To the Asian Greens and Tender Turnip Greens, we are adding Arugula and a non- heading Napa cabbage.  This Napa forms stalks about the size of a bok choy stalk, and they will be presented bunched.  They are tender, mild in flavor, light green in color, and a delicious fall green!  Bok Choy coming in 1-2 weeks, still a little small!

Also we are rotating broccoli, fall radishes, and the last of the cauliflower into shares as well.  If you don't get a selection one week, look for it the next, as I am working to assure everyone has the option of trying the fall greens!

Finally, if you have any credits or have placed shares on hold and not yet picked them up, these are the weeks to cash in credits, and pick up the extra shares!  If you are wanting more of something specific for your on hold share pick ups or credit usage and Harvie is letting you know we are out,  (lets say for example you want to make some sauerkraut and would like lots of cabbage), just email me with your request and I will see what we can do.

With 4 weeks left of our season, we grateful for your continued support of local, organic, regenerative farming!

Have a wonderful week!
