Farm Happenings for July 23, 2019

Posted on July 19th, 2019 by Sarah Rider

This July week has been packed full of high-summer farming highs & lows. The A/C in our coolers are working hard to keep the veggies cold in soaring temps, while we are working hard to keep hydrated in the field. We are feeling particularly grateful for electricity this week as it keeps meat frozen, water running, and veggies fresh for CSA deliveries.

Both the garlic & red onion crops were cleaned and packed into the cooler. The yellow storage onions are next - they'll come out of the field and dry in the greenhouse. Tom, Addison and the horses have been making rows, cultivating and mowing down cover crops. The first major tomato harvest was this week, with both red slicing tomatoes and heirlooms coming out of the field and high tunnel. As we harvest more fruit each week, you'll see more tomatoes appear in your share.

The heat & humidity has been tough on some crops (we're looking at you, chard & kale...) but they're hanging in there. The greens will start coming back as the temperatures moderate, so in the meantime you'll see these on the extras list again. It may be a few weeks till they again appear on the regular share list.

A vacation-season reminder...if you plan to have a friend, family member or neighbor pick up your share for you, please give them all the share pick-up details, including being careful to grab the box (and any extra items, like eggs) with your name on it. If you have questions or suggestions, please let us know.

The u-pick list has been updated, so keep reading for new delicious items available this week!

If you have a delivered share and would like to order chicken or beef, the best way to do so is through our online store
