Farm Happenings for week of June 17th, 2019

Posted on June 15th, 2019 by Sarah Rider

It is breath taking, and sometimes even eerie, how quickly the fields are growing right now. After just a few days away with the kiddos, I come back to an entirely different landscape. That means the harvest list will be growing and changing rapidly, too. We are still a few weeks away from the true "summer crops" like tomatoes and peppers, but there is still wonderful variety in June.

We have started a private Facebook group just for 2019 CSA members. We'll try to keep up on member-specific news, veggie tips, and u-pick conditions on this site. Click HERE to join the group!

The strawberries are coming to a close, but there are still some out there if you have the time and patience to search.

In other fruit news, we are excited to be partnering with a farm down the road to offer an exclusive u-pick option for blueberries.  Highfield Farm (formerly Spring Valley Farm) have several hundred mature bushes that are open for Flying Plow CSA members only.  These berries have not been sprayed with anything and the bushes were fertilized with certified organic fertilizer only this year. Unlike the u-pick crops on the farm, which are part of your share, these you will pay for at the time of picking. The farm accepts cash or credit cards. **Bring your own containers** Please leave pets at home. The farm does not have public bathrooms.

Starting Saturday, June 15th the hours at Highfield Farm are:

Wed 8 am - noon

Friday 2 - 6 pm

Saturday 8 am - noon

Highfield Farm address is 724 Conowingo Rd., Conowingo, MD 21918 (about 3.5 miles south of FPF on Rt. 1).

We expect the blueberry season to be at least 2 - 3 weeks, but that is completely dependent on the weather and crop conditions. You can also find pre-picked blueberries on the extras list this week! (One of the very rare times we will have non-FPF products on the list.)

We  have our own organic, pasture-raised chicken back in stock! If you have a delivered share and would like to order chicken (or any of our meat) the best way to do so is through our online store

U-pick Update:

Flying Plow U-pick hours:

  • Tuesday through Friday: daylight hours
  • Saturday: sun-up to noon

The crop list and limits fluctuate through the week. Please visit the u-pick board in the farm stand to confirm limits, etc.  U-pick is exlcusively for CSA members and limits are per share, not person picking. Please leave your dogs at home.

Stawberries - this is likely the final week. The berries are smaller and harder to come by, but you may pickup up to a quart.

Peas - Pick as many as you will use.

Herbs - chives, oregano, thyme, marjoram
