Farm Happenings for April 3, 2020

Posted on March 30th, 2020 by Kelly Peters

Beets are in and growing!  We had a very busy planting day and got kale, collard greens, kohlrabi, lettuce, broccolini & broccoli raab beds planted. We also got the pea trellis up and the peas are looking good.

The picture above is our beet bed.  Last year we started transplanting them. First we start them in the green house and then when they're big enough we plant them into their beds.  We found this easier because density and spacing can more easily be controlled.  One beet seed can germinate up to 4 beets!  So this helps save our backs and keeps the beets looking nice.

We also use a mix of organic certified nutrients to add to the bed.  Processed chicken manure and feathers, volcanic rock minerals, and a fish/kelp mix.  We then topped off this bed with a garden compost mix to help keep the weeds down.

Stay strong and plant on!
