Farm Happenings for September 10, 2020

Posted on September 7th, 2020 by Kelly Peters

The bees are buzzing and so are we!  Lots of veggies ready to harvest and the farm is rocking as summer flies by.

We've got some new items on the list for this week!  Fresh from our farm is our first batch of sweet corn!  We planted 3 different heirloom varieties that are slowly ripening.  We've also got 1 hybrid variety of sweet bi-color corn.  Our first harvest of celery is also ready!  We grew red and green celery this year.  Celery that is grown all naturally has a much stronger flavor than grocery store celery.  Part of this is because of the use of synthetic fertilizers which cause the plants to uptake extra water and tend to "water down" the flavor.  Our celery is also a smaller stalk than grocery store celery.  It's excellent for chopping up into dishes to add flavor.

From our farm collaborations- we've got Kim Chi and Garlic Scape Pesto available for sale.  These all naturally fermented goodies are prepared by Chef Thubten of Buckman Brines and created with Flat Tack Farm produce.  They are all vegan and femented naturally.   The Kim Chi contains farm grown napa cabbage, radishes, green onions, and peppers.  The garlic scape pesto is made with our fermented garlic scapes, basil, pine nuts, and vegan cheese.

We've also got sweet melons this week from Volehalla Farm!  Charentais, Rock Melons (or Canteloupe), and Green Flesh Muskmelons.  Super juicy and sweet!

We hope everyone is having a great labor day- we're headed to the river in a few!!!

Your farmers,

Kelly & Patrick
