Farm Happenings for June 4, 2020

Posted on June 1st, 2020 by Kelly Peters

We had our first round of membership deliveries this last weekend.  It went great!  More than 50 people received their veggies for the first share of the season.   Many of you will be receiving your first share this week and we are very excited to meet you!  We will be at the pick up locations this weekend and are happy to answer any questions you might have or just chat and say "hello".

A couple of reminders for pick up:

- Please bring a bag or basket with you if you have one.

- Don't forget to customize your share by Wednesday morning so you can swap items or add in extras.

- Please set your preferences in your profile, this helps the Harvie system build your share to your liking.

A couple of seasonal specialties that you'll be seeing this spring include Garlic Scapes- the flower head of a hard neck garlic plant.   A spring specialty that is not found in grocery stores.  They are like a garlicky green bean, with excellent flavor and nice crisp texture.  I love having them grilled (like you would asparagus) or chopped up in a stir fry.  They also make really delicious pickles!

Our first snap pea and snow pea harvest has begun and we're excited to have some new colorful varieties this season, including a green, yellow and purple snap pea mix.

We're still planting lots of goodies for the summer!  Including pumpkins, a three sisters mix of corn, beans and squash.  This traditional Native American method of planting utilizes multiple plants that help each other grow to create a harvest that you can also eat together for nutritional and health benefits.   The corn is planted with beans so that the beans add nitrogen to the soil and they can climb up the corn stalks.  The squash forms a sort of ground cover that flows underneath the corn and beans and keeps the soil weed free and moist.  For more details on the legends of the Three Sisters check out this article: https://www.oneidaindiannation.com/the-legend-of-the-three-sisters/  For details on how to plant your own Three Sisters garden check out the farmers almanac: https://www.almanac.com/content/three-sisters-corn-bean-and-squash

When eaten together the Three Sisters provide each part of a healthy diet and also have enzymes that help each other digest and form complete proteins. The corn is an energy packed carbohydrate, the beans provide protein and the squash important vitamins and minerals.

Our first strawberries are also ripening!  Right now we are selling them by the pint at the farm on Fridays.  Once we have a large enough amount you'll start seeing them in your shares :)

We are also very excited to be partnering with Gather & Feast Farm from La Center, WA.  They grow produce on their sustainable farm for their partner business, Crave Catering.   We have now started offering a few of their delectable farm fresh goodies as extras for our list.   Vinaigrette's created with farm herbs,  Farm Fresh Pesto, Marinara and more!   They are also selling ready made dinner options like Rich and Decadent Chicken Pot Pie.

Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you soon!

Your farmers,

Kelly and Patrick
