Winter Share Week 10 (FINAL WEEK!)

Administrative Details

Welcome to week 10 of the winter share!  We can barely believe we are here already.  Thanks for being with us on this journey.

Here's a very important reminder to pretty, pretty please return your cooler bags.  We are sending out share's in paper bags this week to so that you won't have to remember to make a drop off this holiday season.

Thanks so much and please read on to hear what's happening on the farm!

What's in the Box?

Before I delve into what's happening on the farm, I thought I'd give a quick overview of vegetable storage since some of you are purchasing extra's to keep for the next weeks or months.

Many veggies want to be cold (0-4 degrees celcius) and moist (90-95% humidity).  These include: carrots, beets, turnips, radishes, sunchokes, parsnips, cabbage and others.  Utimately the best way to store these at home is to wrap them up in a plastic bag or container and store them in the fridge.  Onions and garlic are happy to be cold, but want to be on the dry side, so it's often easier to store them in a cool basement or garage, potatoes like cold and moist but will store for quite some time in the same conditions as the above- just be sure to keep them in the dark.  Squash and sweet potato are happier when kept a little warmer then most other veggies, like 12-16 degree celcius.  Maybe a closet or shelf close to the kitchen?  There's tons of info online, but I wanted to get you thinking about this a bit so you can avoid limp carrot disasters.

ON THE FARM

It’s been a truly beautiful year on the farm.  Somehow our weather was relatively moderate; we missed the floods that plagued our neighbors, and while drought is a perennial issue it wasn’t extreme.

We grew some of our most beautiful and abundant food: the broccoli, cauliflower, and cherry tomatoes were among our most rave reviews.

Our staff, our children, and our members all brought such beautiful energy to the farm.

I have so much joy in my heart and so many amazing ideas and dreams for 2024.  I had hoped to get shares set up for next year but it's looking like they'll be ready to launch early in the new year.  We are excited to be adding a few flower bouquet shares and are working on a northern drop off route that will include Wingham, Lucknow, Ripley and perhaps a few other spots.

Over the next few weeks I'll be geeking out on seed catalogs, Christmas crafts, and holiday baking.  I hope you indulge in your version of a perfect holiday season too!

Season's greetings, happy holidays, tidings of great joy to you and yours!
