Farm Happenings for September 28, 2023

Posted on September 22nd, 2023 by Tamara McMullen

Hi Everybody!

Tamara's taking another week off of writing the newsletter. If you see her, you should ask about the wedding festivities, she's been smiling about it all week!

Mark your calendars! October 14 will be another Eat Local Huron Farm Crawl. It will include: Meeting Place Organic Farm, CedarVilla Angus Farms, Capella Meadows, and our very own Firmly Rooted Farm. More details are to come but you can check the Eat Local page here: https://eatlocalhuron.ca/events/farm-crawl/, and we will keep you up to date with the activities we have planned to showcase our farm and the people on it. It's the perfect opportunity to visit your farm and meet your farmers!

We've been lucky to have some beautiful weather this week. Sunny, warm fall days with a breeze make farm work feel like a privilege. We've been busy shifting production from summer crops to fall, and getting all the winter crops planted. It's time to get the last of the tomatoes this year, and eggplant too!, since that greenhouse space is now being claimed by winter spinach. Out in the fields we are getting the last of the broccoli, but we will pick the first of our fall broccolini this week. Look out this week for the return of spinach (only 50 bags, but don't worry, there should be plenty this winter to go around), the addition of thyme, sage, and chives, and bulk carrots to the CSA. Right now is still the best time to kale, swiss chard, fennel and leeks. And be sure to grab the delicata and spaghetti squash since they (taste amazing) only will store for several weeks. Microgreen lovers can enjoy peashoots and spicy microgreens again this week.

Also, thank you for returning your cooler bags and clips. This week we were able to pack all the shares into returned bags!

Thanks for taking part in our farm!
