Farm Happenings for September 21, 2023

Posted on September 15th, 2023 by Tamara McMullen

Hi Everyone! Tamara is taking a week off of writing the newsletter (but not farming, lets not get too crazy) to prepare for her sister's wedding. Which will be taking place right here on the farm. For the last few days her family has been arriving to clean up and decorate the farm. Our greenhouse manager, Carley, keeps telling me how amazing the seedling house looks, and I can't help but agree.

Meanwhile, farm work continues as usual. In the last week we have planted five beds of lettuce in greenhouses and tunnels for our winter crop (compared to our normal one bed a week). We started harvesting winter squash (some of you may have managed to get a delicata in your share) and we are trying to field cure it this year, instead of carrying it in and back out of the seedling house. We picked the first of our fall broccoli, the season goes fast, so be sure to add some to your share if you get the chance. Our fall storage radishes are out of the field as is the fennel. And we starting pulling the first of our tomatoes from the greenhouse, be sure to get your fill by the end of the month since the end of the season is near.

Even though some of our salad greens have suffered due to the wildly fluctuating temperatures, we have lots of kale (curly and dino), and chard available. And our arugula and spicy look small but beautiful for the coming week. Plus the carrots right now are bountiful and delicious.

Here's to beautiful fall weather, plentiful harvests, and delicious meals!
