Summer Share Week 13

ON THE FARM

It’s tomato season for real now, with hundreds of pounds rolling in every other day. The crop is supremely beautiful: red, sweet, and well formed, with almost no seconds.

For those that worship at the altar of seasonal eating, tomato season often represents the most intense kitchen workload of the year with pots boiling and dehydrators running round-the-clock.

I loved what Camille Kingsolver, Barabara Kingsolver’s daughter, had to say about it the book in Animal, Vegetable, Miracle:

“I’m sure this sounds like a hassle and mess to those who have never done it. But for us it’s an important part of summer. Not only because the outcome is great meals for the rest of the year, but because the process is our way of saying good-bye to the sunshine and pace of summer, and reflecting on what the season gave us.”

I love thinking about food preservation as meditation and will endeavour to approach mine with this mindset.

Aside from tomatoes we are working to get our fall crops planted, weeded, and foliar fed.  We are feeling pretty on top of things actually which makes me slightly nervous (what's going to go wrong...?)

What’s in the Box?

The curly kale and swiss chard are absolutely gorgeous and abundant and you can enjoy them with our cherry tomatoes in this lovely recipe: https://www.afamilyfeast.com/tuscan-kale-garlic-tomatoes/

We increased the size of the cherry tomatoes this week from a pint to a quart.  I hope you'll consider it your goal to eat as many of these sweet fruits as humanly possible.  They won't be here for long!  Try this baked feta and cherry tomato recipe to help you.

The cucumbers are ugly, and not producing well.  I tried planting the final round outdoors and it is not working.  I've finally had to admit that it's not worth the time it takes to pick them so we are throwing in the towel.  Sorry folks, I hope you enjoyed them over the last 9 weeks.
