ON THE FARM

Earlier this week I was feeling morose.  August the hardest month as a market gardener because it's peak harvest season, the weeds everywhere are bursting into flower (and seed), diseases and insects are often wreaking havoc, and the whole farm needs to be replanted for fall. 

It's a lot.  

But I'm writing to you today full of feelings of gratitude.  This shift started as an intention to pay attention.  I began to notice the way the morning mist makes everything feel like a fairy tale, I noticed the vibrancy of the flowers blooming everywhere, I looked into my childrens eyes and felt awe, and I heard the laughter of our incredible staff and felt joy. 

Then yesterday that incredible staff did the work of the farm while Brian, Ruby, and I went away to celebrate Jack's 9th birthday.  It's August, it's busy, and yet we got to take time away and make our little boy feel special.  

And here's the other amazing thing: it's August and the fall crops are nearly all planted, the storage crops are nearly all weeded, and the summer crops are (generally) looking pretty darn healthy.  And there's only a few weeks left until September.  It's all good. 

What’s in the Box?

We are particularly proud of our baby greens these days, they are sweet and petite and the quality is outstanding.  They don't often shine so bright in August. 

The tomatoes are beginning to truly ripen on mass.  If you are dreaming of BLT's now is the time, and why don't you try a BBLT: basil, bacon, lettuce and tomato.  I can tell you it is delicious.  

I'm offering the first little bit of celery this week.  I usually hold off until fall but it looks and tastes great right now, and today feels like fall so why not?
