What’s in the Box?

We planted the sweetest mini-romaine’s back in February and they are finally ready.

Sometimes you’ll see these cuties in fancy restaurants sliced in half length-wise, grilled lightly, and dressed up with Caesar, bacon and croutons. We’ve done it before at home and it doesn’t disappoint.

I also love head lettuce as wraps: taco’s, egg salad, grilled chicken, you name it. Delightful.

HERE NOW: green garlic, hakurei turnips, cilantro, basil microgreens

Coming up soon: rhubarb, potted basil, the next round of bok choi

Planted but growing oh-so-slowly: beets, carrots (*the first two rounds did not do well, so it'll be a long wait for these babies, SORRY FOLKS!), broccoli raab, fennel, kohlrabi, broccolini, and SNAP PEAS!

Will make an appearance at the end of May: asparagus

On the Farm
I planted our second round of snap peas today; the first ones we transplanted. They spent 4 weeks in the greenhouse, 3 seeds to a cell, 72 cells to a tray. Then we planted them out 4” apart in the row. It’s thousands of little plants and all for a two week jump on pea season. But we are serious about peas here, and we know you are too.

The second round is simpler, though I soaked them to hasten germination and it meant they were fat and wouldn’t fit through any of my seeders. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seeded anything by hand, but again worth it for peas.

We also put in our first serious brassica planting: 400 row feet of broccoli, another 400 of cauliflower, and 200 cabbage.

If our luck holds, we’ll get the garlic weeded before the end of the day.  We are busy, busy bees over here.

That's it for now, happy eating until next time.
