What’s in the box?

This may be the final week for peas (they might surpise me a keep on going for one more).  But enjoy them now:)

The zucchini's are starting to ramp up for real.  We are picking them small, so they are firm, cute, and a delight to enjoy grilled or sauted.

On the Farm

When Brian and I were but wee farm interns, we once visited a biodynamic farm.  Biodynamic farming is rooted in the philosophies of Dr. Rudolf Steiner, and is focused on the creation of soil health, and the generation of on-farm fertility.

Biodynamics also include a number of "preparations".  While visiting this farm, we witnessed the creation of one of these preparations in which cow manure was buried in a cow horn for 6 months before being dug up and added to a 50 gallon barrel of water.  For an hour the farmers stirred the water creating a central vortex, before each of us recieved a small pail of the preparation and a spruce bough.  Then we walked, dipping the spruce bough in the pail and flinging droplets over the farm.

I was incredulous, and honestly felt a bit ridiculous, until one of the farmers explained to me that she considered this an opportunity to spread her intentions over the farm.  That idea has stuck with me over these past 10 years, and now, when I walk my fields and greenhouses, applying compost tea or a foliar spray of seaweed, I try to do so with intention and I like to think the plants respond to that as much as the droplets from the sprayer.

That’s it for now, happy eating until next time!
