On the Farm: Someone New to You

Hi All!

Someone new is coming at you this week to keep you apprised of all the farm happenings. My name is Erika, I have been farming with Tamara and Brian since June 2020, and I have the lovely opportunity of taking over the writing of the farm newsletter this growing season. As spring kicks off, I'm winding down my university studies and am beyond excited to get my hands back into the soil, my feet back in some boots, and all the tasty veggies back in my mouth.

A little bit about me; I love foraging for mushrooms (another great reason to get excited about spring), I can’t resist fresh homegrown tomatoes (I have dreams about them), and I love anything outdoors. Currently, I’m a university student studying International Development with a focus on agriculture and food security, but I have a lot of experience farming in various regions in Canada. I’m passionate about local food access, regenerative agriculture, and knowledge sharing. I hope that over the season I can share some interesting tidbits with you and learn a lot in the process!

Farm Happenings:

Can you believe it?  This week kicks off our spring CSA, soon you will be able to pick up your glorious veggies!

After receiving this email, you will have until Monday evening at 10:00p.m. to customize your share, or add on extras.  After that your share is set as we need time to plan the harvest, then harvest, wash, and pack your share.

Here is the link to HARVIE university, it is full of excellent help files about setting preferences, making swaps, buying extras, placing holds, changing your drop off location and much more.  If you have a question, you can likely find the answers here: https://harvie.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/categories/115000048773-Harvie-University-Members

If you need something that cannot be found in Harvie university you can reach out to Tamara at firmlyrootedfarm@gmail.com.  Please note that I am getting a high volume of calls and emails and may not be able to respond right away.

One last really important note: our share drop-off’s are hosted by amazing community partners and we are so grateful to them.  They are not being compensated for their kindness, and do not have space to hold your shares.  If you are unable to make a pick up, please reschedule before Monday at 10:00 p.m. (https://harvie.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360001542514-How-to-reschedule-change-a-delivery-location-and-hold-a-share-), or have a friend pick up for you.

 Kitchen Corner

Katrina of Meeting Place Organic Farm has extra Eggs, as her hens are being exceptionally productive. You can add an egg share to your membership, or for the first time, order them as a extra. We farmers have been devouring kale raab these days, and there is a limited amount available this week; roast it or sautée just like broccolini!

Kitchen Clean- Up

Our Making the Most of Your Farm Share guide will help you make good use of your CSA box! In the guide you will find tips for cooking and storing your veggies as well as helpful and easy stir fry and veggie soup stock recipes.

That's all for now folks, happy eating until next time!
