Firmly Rooted Winter CSA Week 4

Administration:

Last week some of our cauliflower did not size up as much as expected.  For those that received slightly smaller cauliflowers, we added in a delicata squash to your share to make up for the lost value.  I hope you enjoy both!

What to expect in your share:

As always, there will be tons of variety available, however we will be featuring our super delicious hakurei turnips, swiss chard, red radishes, and purple beets.

Hakurei turnips are not your grandma's turnips!  They are a type of Japanese turnip that are crisp and sweet, especially at this time of year, and can be eaten raw or lightly cooked.  They might just become your new favorite.

On the Farm:

We have our first major deep freeze coming so we are busily preparing by putting heaters in the coolers, closing greenhouses, row covering, and bringing in the field crops that could be damaged by the -8 degree weather they are predicting.  Its always a bit of a guessing game to decide which ones will make it and which ones need to get crammed into our very full cold rooms. The crops that remain in the field will continue to sweeten until we bring them in over the next month.  We have such winter abundance this year that we are actually building another cold room this coming week so that we can house everything and continue feeding you lovely folks into the colder months.

That's all for now, happy eating until next time.
