Farm Happenings for July 23, 2020

Posted on July 17th, 2020 by Tamara McMullen

Regular rain, temperatures below 30 degrees?  I’m not sure what universe we’ve been transported into but it’s magical out there.  Not to mentioned the incredible, vibrant, and delicious abundance coming out of the soil.  Dinner has become a joy again: is there anything like sliced cucumber and tomato?  Brian is a kitchen wizard and just this week made stewed eggplant with tomatoes and garlic scapes, and garlicky green beans with Turkish hummus, he then followed that up with eggplant stuffed ravioli tossed in basil and tomato.  He’s also perfected grilled zucchini using an old George Foreman grill (remember those?), it’s shockingly good dipped in homemade herbed mayo made with Meeting Place Organic Farm eggs.

We, along with our amazing staff have been working long July hours but the food, and your shining feedback makes all the effort worth it.

Aside from the regular battles with weeds and the endless harvest, we’ve been putting in the first waves of fall and winter food.  There is now a ton of broccoli, cauliflower, kale, collards, and storage carrots in the ground, with more to go in next week.  Some of this will pop up in your September/ October shares, and the rest will be for our 10-week winter CSA program.    Registration for this program is live on Harvie if you are interested, you can register through your current profile.

As we were transplanting, we found swede midge damage in the seedlings for the first time.  This newish-to-Ontario pest lays its eggs on the growing tips of brassica (broccoli family) plants contorting them and stopping them from creating a head.  We inspected each seedling and culled the offenders, tucking the healthy ones all in under row cover immediately to stop any further infection.  We’ve got our fingers crossed over here that our vigilance will be sufficient!

That’s all for now folks, happy eating until next time.
