Summer CSA Week 4

We had an all-day rain this week, that’s the kind of thing a vegetable farmer dreams about.  We’ve also had a lovely break from the heat.

Late June on the farm is a bit of a race, a triathlon of weeding, pest control, and harvesting.  It is sure a test of endurance.  We’ve been running from field to field pulling pigweed and goosefoot, crawling along isles of potato plants searching for cleverly hidden clusters of orange eggs (and not so clever, clumsily copulating beetles).  We’ve also been harvesting an incredible abundance of vegetables as the fields explode into bounty: beets and carrots, yes, greens of course, but now we also welcome broccoli to the table, joined by its friend’s summer squash, and the so perfectly named sugar snap pea.

We’ve been feasting on our first ever farm scale strawberries.   They’ve been coming in at a dribble but we’ve been told to steel ourselves for a flood.  You can find these available to add to your vegetable share as an extra, quantities are limited this week but will be higher next week.

That’s all for now, happy eating until next time!
