Farm Happenings for October 12, 2023

Posted on October 8th, 2023 by Teresa Kurtak

Pictured Above: Some biological pest control in the basil.  Did you know that globally over 900 species of frogs are listed as endangered and 500 as critically endangered.  The last decades have seen a major decline in frog populations, so that glorious croaking sound that fills our nights during the Winter and Spring here on the farm is a precious thing indeed.  Hopefully more and more farms can see themselves as repositories of protected spaces for wildlife instead of just adding to habitat loss. Those of us that live and breathe organic sometimes forget that this is not the way the vast majority of agriculture is practiced.  This frog would likely not survive in a conventional mono-cropped field that was routinely sprayed with toxic chemicals every 7-10 days and where there were no undisturbed soils for acres and acres in all directions. Agriculture doesn't have to be that way.  We our little farm as an ecosystem that we share with the wild.

*Next week is the last Flower Share for the season!! We will likely still have a few things to continue to offer in the extras section, and soon we will start to offer dried floral bouquest and wreaths.

*October 29th is our very own little CSA Pumpkin Patch and Farm Field Day- I will be adding an RSVP option to the Extras Section along with tickets for the Wood Fired Pizza & Salad Lunch (just too tired to do it right now, sorry).  More details below in case you missed them last week.

Fifth Crow Farm Field Day!

You are invited to the farm Sunday, October 29th from 11am-3:30pm

We have been putting off having members out for far too long.  This year we planted jack o lantern pumpkins just for this reason and by golly let's not let them go to waste!

When: 11am-3:30pm

Where: 3800A Cloverdale Road, Pescadero CA 94060

What: Farm Field Day/Pumpkin Patch/Lunch

*Farm Tour @ 11:30 (bring good shoes for walking over rough ground).  Want to go meet our Pastured Hens and Shadow & Teddy, our livestock guardian dogs? We will do a separate tour of the chicken operation at 1:30 as it is a pretty long walk.

*Wood Fired Pizza & salad from Uncie Ro's Pizza from 11am-2pm (we will be selling food tickets in advance starting this week so we can better estimate volumes of food to make-look for an e-mail soon)

*Pumpkin Patch-pick your own pumpkin and carve it, or take it home to carve later. (suggested donation of $5-$20 per pumpkin to go to Pacific Elementary School Foundation)

*Heirloom Apple Tasting- check out the rainbow of flavors- it's pretty wild how one fruit can have such variable flavor and texture! (If we can get a couple volunteers to help, we will also pull out the cider press and make cider. E-mail teresa@fifthcrowfarm if you are willing to help man the cider making)

*Baby Chick Viewing & Goat Oggling- our baby chicks arrive next week, so they'll still be pretty cute for your viewing pleasure.  Sadly due to the high prevalence of the Avian Bird Flu we won't be letting people inside to hold and cuddle ;) Goat Watching- we are currently hosting over a hundred goats from Tomkat Ranch, who are grazing our pastures.  We will see if Tomkat's goatherds could do a little talk about intensive grazing, but if not, the goats will still be there for your goat watching pleasure.

*Farm Stand- for those of you worrying about missing the Farmer's Market.. buy wreaths, gift-able canned goods, dry beans, and stock up on produce as well.

e-mail teresa@fifthcrowfarm.com with questions.  We will be asking you to RSVP starting next week so we can plan better. I will send out an e-mail as soon as I set up a way of RSVP-ing online.
