...and sometimes your tractor catches fire spontaneously.. a mystery electrical issue.  Happened at night, away from any structures luckily and no one was hurt, thank goodness.  It could have been worse had Raul Junior, our Crew Manager's 6 year old, not noticed the flames from a distance and told his Dad.  Took 4 fire extinguishers and a hose to get it out and we all realized we needed a refresher on where all the fire extinguishers are kept.  Good to have more than one fire extinguisher folks!

It's a Root Down Farm week and Companion Bakeshop has just added their homemade granola and buckwheat scone mix to the "EXTRAS".  Yum!

Just a collection of pretty things to brighten my morning left by my daughter Ellie, 6 (left).

FARM UPDATES:  We want to invite you to small farm field day event either Oct. 15th or Oct 28th.  What to expect?  A pumpkin patch, apple tasting, farm tour, pizza & salad lunch from Uncie Ro's Woodfire Pizza, and if weather permits a bean cleaning demo.  Baby chicks will have arrived for oggling too.  We will finalize the date this week and let you know more details.  Admission for CSA members is free of course.  We want to give you a change to see the farm you've been supporting all season.

We've made it through the first 2 weeks of our "Perfect Storm" and this week and next will be the climax with Barbara (our CSA Manager) at a family reunion in Mexico the next 2 weeks, Tractor Operator, Sam & his partner, India (field crew and San Mateo lead) off to multiple East Coast Weddings, Raul still on paternity leave awaiting his son's surgery Oct. 1, another market manager, Luke Estrella, awaiting his first child and then on Paternity leave, and the chances or rain on the horizon. We rushed yesterday to collect all the onions and shallots that were still curing in the field as there is an almost 50% chance of rain this coming Monday evening.  Most of our dry beans now pulled and drying in the field, but unthreshed.  It's harvest Go Time.  Now that the beans are drying they are at risk of damage from rain so we need to rush rush rush to try to get them all threshed and out of the field before any significant rains come.  In a couple weeks we will end our CSA flower share season and begin digging up the dahlias and clearing the fields so they can be tilled and cover cropped for next Spring as well as shift to dried floral wreath and bouquet making. Baby chicks arrive in just a couple weeks too!!
