Finally!! Your first Fifth Crow Box is nigh

Posted on May 7th, 2022 by Teresa Kurtak

It's finally here.. our first CSA Box of 2022!  We've been saving the last of the overwintered items to help spice up the first couple weeks.  I know the weather has felt positively balmy for weeks, but it's still quite early in the growing season and though the fields are full of little plants, most of what's planted isn't ready to harvest yet.  What do we have?  We have carrots, broccoli, beets, radishes, all sorts of salad greens, artichokes and more.  I've offered lots of canned goods options to help fill your boxes till we have more selection (just in case you can't find enough fresh stuff to your liking).  Take advantage, because once the season gets rolling and we're swimming in veggies and berries, I'll be pulling those canned goods and putting them in the "extras" only category.  Extras are things you can add to your share, but you have to pay for in addition to your $30 box.  This week though, they're mostly swappable.  Don't forget to customize your boxes!! I've left lots of goodies that aren't being put in boxes, but are available to swap in if you don't like what's in your box.

Also... we're very excited to begin offering Root Down Farm products as extras the 2nd and 4th weeks of every month.  Markegard Grass-fed Meat deliveries (e-mail Doniga directly to sign up for their Meat share at doniga@markegardfamily.com) will be the 1st and 3rd weeks of each month.  Steadfast Herbs (our neighbors as well) is offering their very popular Anti Anxiety tincture this month.  Instead of subscription this year, we will be offering a different herbal remedy of theirs each month in the extras section.  City Bees (our beekeeper and good friend Robert MacKimmie) sadly doesn't have enough honey to offer just yet).  Between the time of year (honey is always slim early in the Spring) and the drought, his supplies are pretty low. I know many of you have been longing for Pesky Bagel's out of this world delicious bagels.  They are coming, but Chef Tim says he's a bit swamped and you'll just have to wait a couple more weeks.  Sorry :(

ABOUT OUR NEIGHBOR/PARTNER PRODUCERS (look in the EXTRAS category when you customize your box to purchase their products)

*We partner with Root Down Farm for pasture raised pork & chicken and Markegard Family Grassfed for beef, lamb, and pork but sadly we can't offer weekend pick ups of those products as those producers aren't vendors at our Farmers' Markets and would be competing with vendors who are.

Steadfast Herbs is a small herb farm located just down the road from Fifth Crow Farm where they use organic practices to grow over 60 varieties of medicinal plants on one acre of land. In addition to offering fresh cut herbs, they also make small batch teas, tinctures and salves from the plants that they grow in order to support folks in caring for their physical, mental and emotional health. This year Steadfast Herbs' remedies will be available as a weekly optional extra purchase. No need to subscribe, just buy it when you need and get it packed in your Fifth Crow Box.

What's coming to your CSA boxes soon?

Next week we should be able to offer a few strawberries.  Cilantro, rhubarb, little gem lettuces, green cauliflower, baby arugula, and summer squash will all be on soon.

Bon Appetit and don't forget to both customize and pick up that first box!
