Farm Happenings for June 27, 2020

Posted on June 25th, 2020 by Teresa Kurtak

Almost July!  While this morning feels more like early Spring or Fall (we're fogged in), the hot weather and long days are pushing plants to grow so fast it feels like you turn around and they've grown more. This week we are putting rooted basil in the boxes.  Pesto time!  HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR BASIL: Basil doesn't like cold.  Don't put it in your fridge or it will blacken.  Just put it in a vase/jar with the roots covered in water and leave it in a shady spot on your counter.  Pick the leaves as you need them.  Change the water now and again.  We've had people tell us their basil has lasted like this over a month.

What's new this week: carrots are now fully back in season, cauliflower has returned, we're in between rounds of dill and cilantro, potatoes should be harvestable (at least the purple ones) in a week or so, cucumbers just started producing,  and radicchio is on the way. Apples (the earliest varieties) are the size of a whiffle ball and growing fast. This week we start increasing the size of our plantings to deal with the shortening days of Fall.  Yes, the solstice is past and the days are now getting shorter.
