Now presenting... Kalettes!

Posted on January 3rd, 2019 by Heather Coffey

Are any of our winter veggies stumping you? Have your question ready when we knock on the door, or meet us at your pick-up spot this week (see hours below). Read more to learn about some exciting planting that happened here at the farm last week! Finally, we've got New Year's deals on our Pyramid Ferments Stock items.

Have you had Kalette chips yet for a sweet January treat? We got a chance to sneak out and harvest them mid December during a good thaw, and they're in fine form and heading your way this delivery! Just toss them in olive oil, sprinkle with Parmesan if you're feeling fancy, and tuck them in a single-ish layer in the oven at 350F for 30 min or so, check them for nice crispy frilly edges, and warm chewy centres. Here at Fiddlehead it's unanimous - they're more addictive than popcorn.

In other exciting news, we've planted some greens for our March shares! Arugula, Mustards and Radishes are the quickest ones to grow - around 20 days in summertime. However, as the light levels change seasonally what we call the "days to maturity" changes too. So we're expecting these darlings to be ready in around 50 days despite being in an unheated greenhouse. The Winter Solstice is the peak of the slow growth so we waited for the sun's return to try seeding. It can get up to 20°C in there on sunny days despite the cold outside, and the plants can (in theory) bounce back from freezing overnight. It's a trial for sure, hoping that the cold, sunlight, and watering we can do will help them flourish, but we'll have to wait and see ;)

Are some of the winter veggies stumping you? I always try to ask about what's left in the fridge when I meet members - and for those of you with group pick-ups we're coming to visit! So swing by to grab your box while we're there and we'll help inspire you to cook up those veggies :)

Finally, we're clearing out our Pyramid Ferments Stock items. In the stretch of time we've been carrying them, they've expanded to be stocked on shelves in most of our neighbourhoods so we'll no longer be offering them through "extras". However, we have a few jars of each left for those of you that can eat up quick, gorge yourselves on some discount deals whether it's an old favourite or you'd like to try it out for the first time, they're all tasty treats.
