Don't be shy to swaparoo!

Posted on August 19th, 2018 by Heather Coffey

As we progress through the season, I love how I can put limited quantities of certain crops at the end of the list. That way if you don't like beets, you'll get something else. You can also see them in the swap list, and can add them in if you like. So keep an eye on the swappable items that aren't in your box - and if you see anything you'd like don't be shy to swap away. They're also always available as Extras too in case you want everything that's in your box.

Typically smaller harvests happen at the beginning and end of a crop's harvest. At peak harvest I can send them out to everyone in the default box. For example, our first few plantings of zucchinis and pattypans just didn't thrive (cucumber beetles, and weed pressure), but our current patch is yielding well so I can send everyone a zucchini this week. Next week, hopefully I can do pattypans all around. Other items on the swap lists today that are coming in in smaller amounts include cucumbers, squash blossoms, kale, ground cherries, and red radishes.

Have you noticed you get some items twice in a row? My default boxes are typically on a two week cycle, so for example eggplant for two weeks, fennel for two weeks. This is because we have a lot of bi-weekly customers, so I want to make sure our half shares get an eggplant too! For the full shares, I find this gives you a chance to repeat something you loved, or try something different... because I believe that every vegetable has a way to be cooked that everyone can appreciate. Sometimes it just takes some time to find it. Formerly a cilantro hater myself, I've had Steph slip it into cooking in small amounts over the years. Today's taco breakfast (scrambled eggs, bacon, tomatoes, cilantro, hollandaise and maple syrup) just didn't taste right when I left out the cilantro on my second one. So of course I added it back for my third ;)

Enjoy the tastiness,

Heather
