What are spring veggies?

Not so long ago, we had nothing to sell in springtime. Our storage veggie supply would dwindle over the winter, and we don't get to harvest much from the fields till July. We always saw spring as the leanest time of year... but we still need to eat and hated that return to imported produce at the stores. So year by year we've built up our storage capacity and improved the storage conditions (humidity control is huge). We've learnt to grow a few things under the generous plastic roof of a greenhouse that captures the sun creating the warm conditions for veggies to grow when the fields outside are still too cold and wet. We're super excited to feed you all this spring, and we hope you'll marvel with us at the goodness that can be enjoyed in your bags even if it was plucked from the ground or planted last November. That's right, our spinach and lettuces spent the winter without heat in the greenhouse, and started growing for us again in late March. I'm very impressed, and I hope you will be too with the selection you see over the next three months.

This time of year, everything stored through the winter wants to grow. In order to remind veggies that we don't want them to sprout yet, we store them cold. So while at other times of year things like garlic, onions and potatoes are fine on the counter... please put everything in the fridge! That's right, everything we're sending out has been stored in the fridge, and will survive best for you safe in your fridge. We recommend tucking everything in a loose plastic bag to prevent the root veggies from drying out (getting wrinkly) or being too wet (condensation buildup leads to rot).

We have a number of treats that will get randomly allocated based on your preferences this week. When Harvie fills your bag, the computer algorithm looks at what we have available, and puts the items you've ranked the highest in your bag first. The order of people gets randomly reassigned each week to keep it fair ;) So when we don't have enough for everyone I know that at least I can share what we do have fairly with those who like that veggie the best! If you haven't yet set your preferences, now is as good a time as any. You can login and click on the “My Preferences” option in the side-menu. We'll have gradually more and more greens each delivery. Since it's a question I get a lot, here's the root veggies that are running out of stock and we may not have again next time so enjoy them while you can! Potatoes, Rutabaga, Yellow Onions (we have more red & shallots), Golden Beets (we have lots of red) and Napa Cabbage.

... and I couldn't resist sharing a sneak peak at our season busy growing in the greenhouse: Green Garlic, Radishes, Hakuri, Bok Choy, Scallions, Spinach and more to come! They'll weather a gentle frost and hopefully grow beautifully in the new greenhouse. So excited to see green growing things tucked safe in the ground.
