Time to try a new vegetable!

Posted on October 10th, 2020 by Heather Coffey

Whether you're a returning customer, or new to our farm I hope you've all had a chance to try something new this season. I love hearing that our customers have discovered new "favourite" veggies! We've got a new round of fall veggies coming out of the gardens these days, so I thought I'd give a brief introduction to some of our favourites that you might not see in the stores. I hope there might be a new one for you to try!

  • Watermelon radishes are bright pink on the inside, and white/green on the outside. The insides are surprisingly sweet (for a radish), and you'll find all the spice is in the skin. So if you like your spice be sure not to peel them!
  • Kalettes are best imagined by comparing them to Brussels sprouts. Brussels are little cabbages growing on a stalk, and Kalettes are little flourishes of Kale growing on a stalk! We snap them off and tuck them in bags so they're easier to get to you. We love them tossed in oil and roasted so the edges get crunchy (like kale chips)... and they also make great pizza toppers!
  • Hakuri are a Japanese salad turnip, used like a radish for enjoying fresh but are often loved by those who don't like radishes - you'll find they are all flavour and very little spice. They can also be cooked nicely, but don't cook too long or they turn mushy.
  • Kohlrabi is always peeled as it has quite a tough skin, but is juicy and sweet inside. The flavour is most like broccoli stems (same plant family) but it has none of the toughness of the stems. Nice roasted or in soups, our favourite is cut up raw like carrot sticks to enjoy with hummus.
  • Poblano peppers are a mild hot pepper, often sliced in half lengthwise to stuff or blended into pasta sauces. As the days cool I love the beautiful warmth from inside that the peppers provide.

We've got two weeks of deliveries left, so there's time to try them all ;)
