Planting up a storm

Posted on May 15th, 2020 by Heather Coffey

We've got more and more beds planted in the fields day by day. Each week as we seed more in the greenhouse, we have to plant trays out into the fields to make room for them! Last week we got our onions, shallots and leeks tucked in the ground. This week we've planted peas, beets, summer cabbages, chard, radicchio, zucchini, parsley, and celery. I can't wait to settle into our summer routine, alternating field days with harvest days which is a bit easier on the body - but until the main season CSA starts in late June we need every day to be a field day while we set up the garden. There's still two blocks left to tidy up from last year (like taking out tomato trellises), and our potatoes are here to plant soon.

This past week we've all been pushing very hard in the fields, as we would usually be five full time out there instead of three. Last Friday was our original start date for our two Mexican workers, but COVID and issues on the Mexican side have delayed their flights. We're hoping to get flight details any day now. Kelly and Valerie have been stepping in extra to help, while Joanna has been keeping up to us for long days in the fields as a full timer. Not my standard gradual easing into farming for new staff, but she's a trooper and taking it all in stride. Go team and rest up well, we're all taking Saturday and Sunday off this week to enjoy a long weekend too!
