Garden Transition and thoughts about the future

Posted on June 14th, 2020 by Andrew Schwerin

The garden is transitioning from spring greens to late spring and early summer veggies. We'll have less salad veggies after this week, and finish spring with roots like beets and carrots and the heartier greens like kale and chard and dandelion greens. Early summer crops are coming on - the squash and cucumbers; and green beans and tomatoes are starting to happen.

I don't often grow spring carrots, but the early March warmth gave a nice window to get an extra crop in. We tasted them yesterday, and they weren't the sweet winter carrots we are used to. I think they will be great cooked. One can make half a meal by sauteeing some onions, carrots, and celery in butter or oil, then adding those summer greens like chard, kale, and dandelions. A little rice, and a bit of beans or meat makes for a good meal. Or saute the onions and carrots, then add some squash and green beans mmmm.

The spring crops will be replaced with sweet potatoes, and we'll try growing some cantaloupe too. Some of the space will be reserved for fall crops, which we start planting Aug 1st (winter carrots). We'll also start seedlings for broccoli, cauliflower and many of those greens in late July, to plant out in late August.

And so we start thinking about the fall... this would be good time to get any feedback about how the Veggies Boxes are working for you, and any changes you would like to see in the future. Box sizes, delivery days/hours, variety... and I'll consider the feedback as I plan out the fall shares. Some farms offer an every-other-week option instead of smaller boxes?

There was not a strong demand for the Farm Stand orders, so I opened Saturdays up for more shares, if any new people want to sign up for the rest of this season.
