Farm Happenings for April 29, 2020

Posted on April 24th, 2020 by Andrew Schwerin

Welcome to the first week of Veggie Boxes from Sycamore Bend Farm. Variety is a little light. You can swap things out, or if you want some credit for when we have more variety, we'll figure out how to do that. Also, if you haven't had the "Hakurei Turnips" before, I highly recommend changing your preference to getting them. When they really come into production, I will try to pressure everybody into taking some. They are really delicious - we call them Japanese turnips, or Salad Turnips (Hakurei is the Japanese name).

When you pick up your share, there'll be blue totes, with labels that have your name and contents. You can take the tote with you, and bring it back next week (please return somewhat clean) - or you can transfer contents and leave tote at pick-up site.

If you have questions, you can email Harvie directly at support@harvie.farm or even call them 412-567-3864. We pay them a good amount for all this management, so please make use of it.

Early spring is the time for spinach and salads. The spinach and carrots this week were started last fall and grown through the winter. We planted another 130 foot bed of carrots during the warm spell in early March, so those should be ready in June. Sorry we didn't get green onions planted, this would be the time for eating them. We have chives in some boxes, and he wild onions are a tasty addition right now.

With some cool weather, and excessive rain and clouds, the plants are just starting to hit their early spring flush.

This week we have been busy planting and transplanting late spring and mid summer crops - outdoor tomatoes, bell peppers, bok choy, swiss chard, parsley, dandelion greens, and head lettuce got planted just before the rains came. And we direct seeded more salad crops.
