Dickinson College Farm Field Notes for Week of May 27th

Posted on May 27th, 2019 by Jenn Halpin

Welcome to Week Two of the 2019 CSA Season with the Dickinson College Farm!

Last week was a beauty and we are grateful to have stayed out of the path of the severe weather that was forecasted for Thursday. Hail and strong winds are never on a farmer's wish list. Instead, we experienced mild and sunny days which enabled us to scratch a lot of projects off the farm work list.

The arrival of the bulk of our summer team had a huge impact on advancing farm efforts. One of our main areas of focus last week was clearing pasture fences of vegetation, including poison ivy. Our new farm team was up for the challenge with only a few bouts of poison ivy as mementos. This season's farm team is upbeat and determined - two qualities that will surely propel the College Farm toward a successful season.

Other news from the farm include the arrival of our first calf! With lambing season behind us (over fifty lambs were born this spring!!) it is now calving season. Veteran cow, "Spooky" gave birth to a healthy heifer.

One bit of information we want to be sure to share is that if you miss your pick up on Friday at Project SHARE, we will hold your boxed share at the College Farm until the following Tuesday (at 5pm) for you to retrieve. Please be sure to email farm@dickinson.edu if you miss your pick up and wish to collect your box at the College Farm. Otherwise, shares will be donated.

We hope that you enjoy this week's share! Please feel free to reach out with any questions, concerns, or suggestions. We love hearing from you!!
