Farm Happenings for September 5, 2023

Posted on September 1st, 2023 by Alex Smith

Hello CSA members,

IMPORTANT:  please return your CSA tote if you have them! We are running out and they are expensive. Thank you!

I hope everyone had a great back to school week! It was a hectic week with the pieced together student shifts but we got it all done. We are looking forward to a more regular schedule again next week.

It's early yet, but whiffs of fall are in the air. The days are still hot but the nights are cool. Our cucurbit (melons, squashes, cucumbers, and winter squash) growing season is coming to a close. Tomatoes and peppers are still going strong for another month or so but plants are no longer growing, they are solely focusing on fruit production now. And with these changes my thoughts start to drift to next year:  what to change, what to keep the same, and how we can better serve our mission to deliver high quality produce, while improving the farm ecosystem.

Pictured:  Crew Leader, and corn grower extraordinaire, Raymond with some "huitlacoche." Ustilago maydis is a fungus pathogenic to sweet corn, most corn growers see a little bit here and there. Our last wave of sweet corn has a fair amount. Despite it's appearance, some consider it a delicacy. I haven't been brave enough to try it yet. I'm happy with just plain, not fungal sweet corn thank you very much.

Happy cooking!

Alex
