Farm Happenings for August 15, 2023

Posted on August 11th, 2023 by Alex Smith

Happy Friday everyone!

After a slow start, we are into the heart of tomato season. There is nothin' like a central Pennsylvania tomato. PA summers have the right balance of long days of sunlight and warm air for tomato plants to grow rapidly and develop large flavorful fruit. Down in Florida, they can grow them year round, but they never have the long days of sunlight. Sunlight is needed for the plants to develop the sugars that make the fruit delicious. So, I'll say it again, there is nothin' like a central PA tomato! This week we are offering red round slicers, heirlooms, and cherries. I may add a few Roma's to the list depending on how they ripen over the weekend. We pick our 'maters before they are fully ripe so we can get them to you in good condition. If your tomato is still a little under ripe when you get it, just set it out of direct sunlight on the counter and it should be ready in a day or so. The picture this week is our crew pickin' those tomatoes!

We also pulled in the rest of the onions this week. That's always an arduous task but it's rewarding to see a crop of onions laid out carefully to cure. There are some whoppers! I really can't say what we did right, but the onions grew very happy this year.

We hope to see yall at the CSA picnic next week! Here's the link!

Best,

Alex
