Farm Happenings-Week of July 12, 2022

Posted on July 8th, 2022 by Will Nelson

Hi CSA members,

This week is really feeling like summer. With temperatures in the high 80's and bright sunny days, our summer crops are starting to make their first appearances. Cucumbers, squash, and zucchini are in full swing and beans and fresh onions are coming on. Soon, we'll be enjoying tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, melons, and sweet corn.

It's funny to think about planting fall crops when we are just starting to harvest summer crops, but that's what farmers must do to have a continuous supply of produce throughout the season. This week, we planted our second succession of fall brassicas: broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, and kale. By the beginning of August, all out fall crops will be planted and by the end of August all of our outdoor crops will be planted and we will be moving back into the greenhouse.

*SPECIAL NOTE: Rose Nelson, Farmer Will's daughter, will be selling flowers during the CSA pickup at the farm on Tuesday. Flower bunches are five dollars. She is attempting to raise money to purchase a dairy cow. She grew and bunched all the flowers with her mother. Make sure to stop in and say hi!*
