Farm Happenings-June 10th 2022

Posted on June 6th, 2022 by Will Nelson
Blueberries are blue, blackberries are (almost) black, strawberries are…not the color of straw. This point of conversation came up with the crew either on the largest strawberry harvest we’ve had this season (Over 400 pints plus an overflow of quarts!) or on a hot afternoon spent straw-mulching the onion and solanceous plantings. We’ve got a hunch strawberries got the name some time ago from farmers who planted the berry slips in the fall, covered them in mounds of straw to protect them over winter, and saw the red berries blooming through the straw the following spring. But that’s a hunch and we’re farmers, not etymologists or agricultural anthropologists, and we’re moving fast and the season is not slowing down any time soon. So! If you’re curious about the name origins of this season’s most sweet and tender and abundant fresh berry, do some digging for us and let us know, we’d be berry grateful to find out.
