Farm Happenings for November 23, 2021

Posted on November 19th, 2021 by Will Nelson

Announcement: This is a reminder that there will NOT be a Friday pickup on November 26th because of the Thanksgiving holiday. If you are a Tuesday member please pick up you share at the farm as usual. If you are a Friday member, please pick up your share on Tuesday November 23rd at Project Share between 12-5.

Farms are a constant ever changing atmosphere - it’s where things come to grow and prosper and then eventually wilt away and decompose (and if done right, it is composted or recycled and goes on to contribute to new life forms). The cycle continues in a bountiful dance of reciprocity. And alas, it is now our time to say our goodbyes (to the land, to coworkers, to our routine) and carry on elsewhere in the world outside of the farm. This week marks the last week of work for the 1st year apprentices that arrived in late May at the onset of a sticky sweaty summer with an open mind and hope and energy. For myself, I am happy to be getting a break and spending the holidays with loved ones. Josh, Maddie, Harmony, Espoir, and Grace experienced a truly unpredictable and uncommon season full of twists and turns. We were challenged to try things unfamiliar and sometimes scary. Most things that are new bring some element of fear. But there were always people by our side for support, which I am forever grateful for. On Thursday, a farewell desert potluck celebration was organized in our honor, which reunited summer student farmers and apprentices for the last time.

This week the weather was kind to us for the most part. The sun poked out of the clouds while we bulk harvested some crops like nappa cabbage, brussels sprouts, and so so many carrots. As the holidays approach, we have been selling and packing many potatoes and sweet potatoes. It’s quite satisfying and humbling to see the fruits of our labor make it from seed, to seedling, to transplant, to harvest, to CSA share. I worked market at Farmers on the Square for the last time and got to say goodbye to fellow vendors and loyal customers that stop by each week - and thoroughly enjoyed making my last special pumpkin marinara potato pizza. Other farm happenings include the construction of a brand new chicken coop, compost sifting, and making potting soil for next season. I look forward to this next chapter for current apprentices and wish the best of luck and love to incoming students and apprentices.
