Tuesday CSA: Dickinson College Farm Field Notes for Week of October 7th

Posted on October 4th, 2019 by Mary Silva

Don't Want A Good Thing to End?!

We invite CSA members not already signed up for the "CSA Fall Extension" option of our 2019 season to consider the opportunity to extend their weekly supply of fresh vegetables from the Dickinson College Farm!

The CSA extension runs six additional weeks (November thru mid-December). Our Harvie system is set up to automatically renew for our  "Fall Extension".    With this in mind, please note these important details.

  • Harvie will auto-renew CSA members not currently signed up for the additional six weeks on October 22nd.
  • Payment method is the same as the member used on the first order. Members can update what payment option they'd like to use for the extension. My Profile--Edit Profile--Choose new payment option--Save. If credit card information has changed, please update in the Harvie system.
  • Members can change their place of pick up for the extended season if desired. Otherwise, it will remain the same. To change place of pick up, Go to "My Deliveries".
  •  Members who do not want to be enrolled in the Fall extension MUST opt out of auto renew.  Members can do this thru their Harvie account before October 22nd. Go to My Profile --Edit Profile -- toggle off Auto renew --Save.
  •  If you already signed up for the CSA extension season, no need to do anything!

Please contact farm@dickinson.edu with any questions.

Field Notes:

Well, autumn has finally arrived! After weeks upon weeks of unseasonably dry and hot weather the rain that fell earlier this week was truly welcomed by everyone at the farm, especially Will who has been diligently irrigating our fields in the absence of precipitation. Summer favorites like tomatoes were harvested for the last time this week and their trellising systems deconstructed. Soon, a frost is bound to come and so we are prepping to cover our delicate crops so that we might extend their season by a few weeks.

This time of year is a pleasure to work outside in. Cool mornings that yield to warm and sunny afternoons tend to lift spirits and keep everyone energized. Not too hot, not too cold, just right!

While outside crops tend to self manage at this point in time, the workload in our packinghouse increases exponentially. The months of September and October are some of our busiest ones, especially with deliveries to the dining hall and abundant crop harvests destined for our CSA and farmers’ market stand. We are incredibly grateful to the logistical prowess of Jenn Wolf, the farm’s Packing House Coordinator. Each day, Jenn navigates a dynamic workplace environment with ease and a calm disposition. This makes her an invaluable asset and to our program and those who have the opportunity to work with her. With the help of students and apprentices, Jenn Wolf tackles a diverse array of projects each week. There is truly never a dull moment in the lower barn!

It is amazing to consider how many people, logistics, and working hands go into a food that we make into meals each day. As a proverb goes, “many hands make light work”. Thanks to the amazing team at the Dickinson College Farm, we are able to accomplish great things!

Best,

Jenn Halpin
