Farm Happenings for July 2, 2021

Posted on June 28th, 2021 by Will Nelson

As a new apprentice to the Dickinson College Farm, I’ve been navigating a new lifestyle on the opposite side of the country while diving into livestock and vegetable production. I deeply care about connecting with food as I discover more about myself and what it means to work in a team environment during long harvest days, doing animal care, working market and meeting the Carlisle community, etc. Some moments that brought a smile to my face this week were meeting the newborn kittens wandering the farm that have now been adopted and also completely selling out of pizzas on market day (our special pesto pizza with strawberries and glaze drizzle is my personal favorite). And despite some difficult animal emergencies in the past few weeks, our sheep, chickens, and cows are looking healthy and well.

The vegetable crew has been working hard to keep weeds out of crops, keep the soil happy, and harvest new crops like zucchini and squash - soon to come to market. Pictured here is our team mulching melons and sweet potatoes on one of the hottest days on the farm so far. I’ve realized how much balance is required for all aspects of a farm to work just right and I’m excited to continue learning and growing with this team.

Feliz Dia Del Campesinos!
