Farm Happenings for May 28, 2021

Posted on May 24th, 2021 by Will Nelson

CSA pickup details for Friday are listed below. But first, some updates from our fields and pastures...

This is the time of year when there are never enough hours in a day to accomplish all that needs to get done on the farm. As the academic school year ends and our students shift from campus life to farm life it can be a challenging transition. The hot temperatures this week added another layer to this adjustment. Yet, despite hot and dry conditions, our newest student farmers have navigated their new work environment seamlessly.

This week, our vegetable team spent a lot of time transplanting and irrigating main season crops like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant in our production fields. Our livestock team has been focused on moving cows and sheeps regularly to new pasture, including the college's solar field in Carlisle, bottle feeding orphaned lambs, and even welcoming a new calf to our beef herd this week. At market, our stand has been hopping with record sales since Farmers on the Square started three weeks ago.

We are happy to finally launch our 2021 CSA season. We are grateful for your membership and look forward to providing you with fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruit each week. Speaking of, strawberries are ripening in the fields! Everyone looks forward to harvesting these sweet delights. We will be sure to keep you posted on PYO options in our strawberry fields. Please stay tuned!

Friday Pickup

If you are signed up for the curbside pickup in Carlisle for Friday, please follow the directions listed below to navigate your way to our CSA location at Project SHARE.

From North Orange Street, turn into the Dickinson College Facilities Management, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB), and Project SHARE parking lot. Proceed straight toward the far end of the parking lot where Project SHARE is located. Continue past the entrance to Project SHARE and slowly drive around the back of the building (this is a one-way alley).

The CSA Curbside Pickup will be located out of the back of Project SHARE. Please stop at the large garage door and a farm staff member will greet you and deliver your CSA share. We ask that members please not get out of their cars.

If you have any problems or get turned around, please call Jenn Halpin at 717-713-0275 and she will guide you in.
