Farm Happenings for May 25, 2021

Posted on May 21st, 2021 by Will Nelson

CSA pickup details for Tuesday are listed below. But first, some updates from our fields and pastures...

This is the time of year when there are never enough hours in a day to accomplish all that needs to get done on the farm. As the academic school year ends and our students shift from campus life to farm life it can be a challenging transition. The hot temperatures this week added another layer to this adjustment. Yet, despite hot and dry conditions, our newest student farmers have navigated their new work environment seamlessly.

This week, our vegetable team spent a lot of time transplanting and irrigating main season crops like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant in our production fields. Our livestock team has been focused on moving cows and sheeps regularly to new pasture, including the college's solar field in Carlisle, bottle feeding orphaned lambs, and even welcoming a new calf to our beef herd this week. At market, our stand has been hopping with record sales since Farmers on the Square started three weeks ago.

We are happy to finally launch our 2021 CSA season. We are grateful for your membership and look forward to providing you with fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruit each week. Speaking of, strawberries are ripening in the fields! Everyone looks forward to harvesting these sweet delights. We will be sure to keep you posted on PYO options in our strawberry fields. Please stay tuned!

Tuesday Farm Pickup

This year, our CSA will continue as a curbside pickup.  Each week, your CSA share will be located on the front porch of the barn, under the overhang.

To safely retrieve your CSA share, please pull into the farm following the "Enter" sign located on the West side of the corn crib, then continue around the corn crib as if exiting the farm. Pull your car up along the southwest corner of the barn (to the front porch of the barn). See map for details.

You will see a sign welcoming you to please get out of your car to retrieve your share. Farm staff will place additional instructions to help you through the process.  Please do not idle at the CSA share pick up table since other CSA members may be waiting in their cars behind yours.

You may also park your car at the farm parking lot and walk to the front of the barn to retrieve your CSA share.

We aim to make the farm curbside pickup run as smoothly and as safely as possible. If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to send them our way (farm@dickinson.edu).
