Farm Happenings for October 9, 2020

Posted on October 5th, 2020 by Will Nelson

This week on the farm we have been loving the transition to fall! Crisp mornings make for lovely harvest weather, and we are starting to add more storage crops to the coolers such as beets. Outdoor solanacea crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant are not enjoying the cooler temps and they are putting out their last fruits. We are taking advantage of them while we can!

Our main focus this week and next is cracking garlic for seed, which we aim to plant within two weeks. We also spread compost on several fields to give them a nutrient boost before spreading cover crop seed. The cover crops will grow during the fall and keep the soil protected over winter. We also added transplants, including kale and chard, to another greenhouse this week.
