Field Notes:

It’s hard to believe it’s already mid-August! Summer abundance is at its peak - sweet corn, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and watermelon are all overflowing our farm bins. We just harvested the last round of potatoes for the season and garlic and onions have been cleaned and put into storage.

This time of year, farmers have to live in multiple seasons – harvesting summer crops, keeping fall crops happy during these hot summer days, and also seeding crops for winter. We’re putting the final touches on our greenhouse plans to extend our growing into December, when it’s too cold to grow anything in the fields. It’s hard to even think about it being that cold when we have 90s in the forecast! This is our final week with our full student worker crew.

It’s been a pleasure to watch all the students learn and grow as farmers and their hard work is very much appreciated. It’s no small task to farm in peak season with heavy harvests and plenty of weeding, all in the heat and humidity, but these students have done it with ease. We can’t thank them enough.
