Field Notes

If life gives you melons it's possible you are dyslexic, but also know that you are incredibly fortunate because, as our farm crew can now attest to, those melons are probably downright DELICIOUS. This week our crew harvested several hundred (!!) watermelons and cantaloupes, and I can now confirm that a slice of watermelon enjoyed in the field beats a glass of lemonade any day.

This week was all about big harvests and pest management. We started the week with a melon harvest and a lesson on IPM (Integrated Pest Management) from our vegetable production manager, Will. Out in the fields we're scouting for signs of aphids, caterpillars, and other hungry critters hoping for a free meal. After a fluffle of rabbits (yes, that's the actual terminology!) took out our Fall chard plantings and cabbage loopers began nibbling our seedlings, we've been extra diligent about setting live traps and scouting for pests.

We also harvested all of our storage onions this week - a task our team was well equipped for after our garlic harvesting extravaganza a couple weeks prior. The onions will now cure for a few weeks before they go into storage and into your CSA boxes.

In other news, our flock of sheep have returned to the farm after a brief vacation at the College's solar fields. We're glad to have them back and baaing once again.
