Tuesday CSA: Dickinson College Farm Field Notes for Week of July 29th

Posted on July 27th, 2019 by Jenn Halpin

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

OUR 2019 CSA PICNIC WILL BE ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 23RD FROM 5PM TO 9PM

FARM OLYMPICS, FARM TOURS, FUN!

WE'LL SUPPLY THE GRILLED ITEMS (MEAT AND VEGGIES) PLUS A BIG SALAD. WE INVITE YOU TO BRING A SIDE DISH OR DESSERT.

After the weeks long heat wave, the crew was pleasantly surprised and relieved by the much cooler weather this week. We spent much of the week doing classic farm jobs such as harvesting for CSA, farmers market and the dining hall, weeding (lots of it thanks to the healthy mix of sunshine and rain!), trellising tomatoes, seeding new crops and processing garlic. I think it’s fair to say that the crews’ favorite job as of recently is processing garlic – which we took out of the fields one week ago. The garlic needs to dry in order for it to store and last for the next eight months or so. This requires us to hang the garlic in the barn on racks and wires so each head can get air flow and dry out. In a few weeks all of the garlic will be off of the barn floor and hanging in every open space possible! Later in the fall we will take down the garlic and cut the stems and roots and clean them up, so they look the way you receive them in your CSA shares. It is such a beautiful sight, be sure to check it out when you pick up your CSA share or anytime you’re at the farm!

Thanks!
