Farm Happenings for June 5, 2020

Posted on May 28th, 2020 by Will Nelson
Hello everyone! It’s so nice to meet you, even virtually. I can already appreciate that y’all are a thoughtful and caring group of people, given your commitment to the farm and its mission. So thank you! My name is Joyce and I’m a new apprentice, hailing from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. I’m sure some folks will find amusement in the fact that I have no background in farming or agriculture — I majored in Health Policy & Management and my parents are still (lovingly) guffawing at the fact that I’m out here. But I think some of the most exciting, even if scary, possibilities in this life are the bold decisions we make and grow from, guided by compassion and a commitment to a more just world. And what could accomplish this better than learning about farming and what it takes to nurture our communities? Especially being taught by the creative, hard-working, and thoughtful folks that run this farm. I’ve just completed my first week here, adjusting to moving my body all day after months of mild sedentary habits, yurt living (y’all have so much train activity!) and a learning ecosystem immersed in a pandemic. I am both grateful and overwhelmed by all there is to learn on the farm and beyond. I’m excited to learn from you all as well!

The food from the farm has helped to remind me of the prevailing lesson that while pandemic times have shed light on the importance of community, agriculture has always been about community. It’s no surprise that farms have become a central hub for organizing resources and support for the communities they are a part of. I hope this resonates with you too.

I hope to become more acquainted with y’all over the course of my time in Pennsylvania, and I’m wishing your families continued health, connectedness and justice. In love & light, Joyce
