Tuesday CSA: Dickinson College Farm Field Notes for Week of July 22nd

Posted on July 20th, 2019 by Jenn Halpin

Summer is in full swing here in South Central Pennsylvania. This week’s temperatures and heat index have been intense and we’re doing everything we can to keep up with farm work, while also staying hydrated and safe from heat exhaustion. Hope you’re all doing the same.

With heat and rain comes plant growth, along with plenty of weed growth. Weeds aren’t scared of a 115-degree heat index! The farm team is working hard to keep our plants weeded and happy. The heat also provided our first eggplant, green bean, pepper, and tomato harvests – all of the summer favorites. In the coming weeks, we’ll start to bring in our watermelons and cantaloupe. Perfect for hot days like these!

Our biggest accomplishment this week was our huge garlic harvest. We had the perfect garlic harvest conditions on Tuesday – dry enough for the garlic to cure properly, but not too dry that it’s impossible to get out of the ground. The crew worked all day to get roughly 8,000 feet of garlic out of the ground and into the barn to cure. No less than thirty minutes later, it down-poured. We were lucky to avoid it! Now the barn is overflowing with drying garlic and we’ll be working on hanging it to cure until it’s ready for your shares.
