We are excited to feature some local, sustainably harvested seaweed from the Gulf of Maine in this weeks shares! Give Atlantic Holdfast’s Wakame or Kombu seaweed a try in soups and stir-frys. It will also pair well with the Negi Miso from Go-En Fermented Foods this week! On a greener front, super sweet spinach has made it back in this weeks shares from our farm partners at Villageside Farm and Bahner Farm. Yeah! Along with a great assortment of winter roots be sure to check out swapping options to add even more diversity in your shares. We’ve got Burke Hill blueberries on the line up as well this week!

Harvie has made improvements to the Item Swap/Share Customization page. A few links are included below showing the changes made to the process. Email farmers@daybreakgrowersalliance.com if you need assistance.

Update from The Buckle Farm

The Buckle Farm has been busy wrapping up all of the administrative tasks that come with running a small business and inevitably get pushed to the winter months. Jim and Hannah are making as much space in their schedule to get into their greenhouse! They’ve fired up their propagation house to start the season’s spring greens, onions, perennial herbs, peppers and tomatoes. They’ve also prepped their high tunnel for plantings of radish, salad turnips, kale, chard and baby beets.

With each passing day the snow recedes from the fields, more robins appear to scour the dry grass for scraps of last years’ apples in the orchard, and the bees venture further from the hives. Soon manure will be spread to feed fall crops, and the first beds will be formed for spring plantings of lettuces, frisée, endive and spinach. The excitement of Spring is a powerful elixir, and makes the first work of the season feel easy and delightful. The season will have ups and downs (they always do), but now is the time to soak up sunshine, sow seeds, and feel hopeful!
