Farm Happenings 8/16/21: Mid-August is Peak Season / Update from Bahner Farm

Posted on August 10th, 2021 by Daybreak Growers Alliance

We're rolling right though August, enjoy the last month of summer, stay safe and eat good food! Peak harvest season is here, blueberries, tomatoes, basil, broccoli, beans, lettuce and so much more coming in from the fields for your boxes. Check out the cheeses, NEW goat yogurt, bagels, ferments, eggs, meats, fish, plan your summer meal menus when you customize your box! Bulk heirloom tomatoes, basil and garlic is available this week.

If you've never tried making Baba Ganoush (ga-noosh) with your eggplant (link to recipe here) you're in for a treat. Baba Ganoush is a middle-eastern appetizer, you grill or bake your eggplant, scoop out the insides and mix with tasty things like garlic, lemon juice, tahini, cumin, cayanne, olive oil and parsely, delish!

Update from Bahner Farm

Like most farms in our state, August is peak season at Bahner Farm for veggie variety. This time of year we harvest almost every day of the week, and our walk in coolers are full to the brim. Tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, squash - all the most colorful vegetables are flowing in. It's a rainbow of abundance. Obviously it's also a very busy time, so I try hard to find time to enjoy these delicious seasonal treats, and maybe sneak in a late day swim with the kids. Ripe tomatoes and swimming - they won't wait for me to have time to enjoy them!

The fall crops are just around the corner - Fall beets and carrots are growing slowly, onions will be harvested in the next few weeks and spread out to dry in the greenhouses, winter squash are getting color, potatoes will be ready to dig. Winter is coming, and the summer veggies will fill our winter pantries.
