The Locust Grove is an orchard that specializes in peaches in Central Maine, growing 14 varieties of peaches. These peaches have not been sprayed with anything whatsoever - a rarity in peach production, as peaches are typically one of the “dirtiest” crops. The orchard was started by Gordon Kenyon in 1986. In recent years, Gordon has been working with Colleen Hanlon-Smith, who has recently become his business partner and successor to the orchard. Colleen is also one of the farmer owners of Daybreak and we are super excited to have her as part of our team!

This weeks fruit share: We've loaded up this weeks fruit share with 3 quarts of peaches! Time to make some peach preserves or simply slice em up and put them in your freezer till a later date to pull out for a peach crisp in the middle of the winter! This will be the last of the peaches in our fruit share so enjoy them while you can as we move into apple season!

Update from Common Wealth Farm

Our family farm began in 2010 with a vision of providing high quality poultry products, specifically duck. As things progressed, we fine-tuned our business to focus on the best chicken we could produce. Starting each year in March, we welcome about 450 chicks every two weeks through September. They spend four weeks in brooder nurseries and the remaining time, until processing, on pasture where they are housed in “tractors” that are moved every day to fresh grass and clover and are fed a supplement of organic feed. There are no antibiotics, insecticides, pesticides, or animal by-products on the farm. Fertilizer is provided by our chickens!

The same very capable team that cares for the chickens also processes, cuts, and packages them. All birds – chicken, pheasant, and quail – are raised and processed sustainably and humanely. We provide fresh poultry and game birds, and all cuts of chicken to farmers’ markets, restaurants, co-ops, and wholesale accounts from Bangor to Skowhegan and along the mid-coast. We invite you to try our chicken and other birds, as well as chicken, duck and quail eggs, for a palate-changing experience!
